Swinging in the Rain

Travellers Rest Golf Group

If only there had been a pop group called Wet Wet Wet who had made a record named “Rain is all Around” I am sure they would have had a worldwide No. 1 hit this week, well in Thailand at least. Yes it was a little damp underfoot this week and playing golf was a complete lottery. If it wasn’t actually raining, players were in grave danger of catching the dreaded “plugged ball” disease and some even suffered “completely lost ball” disease which is a far worse ailment.

Monday, June 20 Pattana (A and B) Stableford

On Monday 20th June the week commenced for the TRGG with a visit to Pattana (A and B courses). Always a good test of golf, it is not easy to get the better of Pattana and this week was no exception with no one bettering their handicap. Jim Ray had a real go but fell just short on 34 pts which proved good enough for top spot. Joe Depasquale was left doing an impression of the Everly Brothers “Crying in the Rain” to finish second a point behind. Rob Herald finished third some way further back doing a Buddy Holly impression of “Raining in my Heart”.

  1. Jim Ray (20) 34 pts
  2. Joe Depasquale (12) 33 pts
  3. Rob Herald (18) 29 pts

Wednesday, June 22 Greenwood (C and A) Stableford

On Wednesday 22nd June we headed off to Greenwood to play (C and A courses) or as they let us have a two tee start one half of the competitors played C and A and the other half played A and C. I hope that makes sense to you all. Anyway the powers that be decided on two separate competitions so there are two sets of results.

The C and A contingent was headed by big Mike Smith who powered his way round a course soggy at the edges. His 37 pts was far too good for Joe Nagle who finished second some way behind. Sir Norman Cheetham took third place.

In the reverse fixture it was Derek Thorogood who got fed up listening to The Cascades singing “Rhythm of the Rain” and managed a rendition of the Stranglers singing “Always the Sun” to just for once take first place. He certainly managed to rain on Rob Herald’s parade who finished second, just ahead, after a count back, of Gary Bennett in third.

(C and A course results)

  1. Mike Smith (6) 37 pts
  2. Joe Nagle (13) 34 pts
  3. Norman Cheetham (15) 33 pts

(A and C course results)

  1. Derek Thorogood (13) 38 pts
  2. Rob Herald (18) 37 pts
  3. Gary Bennett (16) 37 pts

On Thursday 23rd June, now forever to be known as Independence Day if you are a Brit, the TRGG paid its weekly visit to Green Valley. Young Jari Lindstrom gave a great version of The Ronettes singing “Walking in the Rain” and then walked off with first place but only just. It took a count back before we discovered that he had pipped John Goodchap who then did a Johnnie Ray and went “Just walking in the Rain”. This left Anthony Atherton in third place who gave a rendition of Roy Orbison’s “Crying”.

  1. Jari Lindstrom (11) 38 pts
  2. John Goodchap (16) 38 pts
  3. Anthony Atherton (13) 36 pts

Friday, June 24 Emerald Stableford

On Friday 24th June it was the turn of Emerald to provide the challenge to the largest field of the week still showing resilience to the threatening weather conditions. On the day it was last week’s winner of the Match Play event Neil Wilkinson who again showed he is still in top form by amassing 40 pts and finishing first. He went off whistling Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best” whilst second placed Jack Mooney went off muttering “I hate this game” and third placed Mike Smith flexed his muscles and tore the telephone directory in half.

  1. Neil Wilkinson (12) 40 pts
  2. Jack Mooney (20) 37 pts
  3. Mike Smith (6) 37 pts

Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to play a round of golf with the TRGG please phone Derek Thorogood on (0806733118) or pop into the Valentines Guest House (Restaurant and Bar) in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.
