PSC Fishing Trips – July Report

Both of the Saturday trips on July 13 and 27 were well attended, with 7 participants on the first and 8 on the latter.  Both days were similar, in that the sea-state at times provided testing conditions, and some caught a lot more fish than others.

Colin reported from the 13th that early in the day the onshore wind kicked up a bit of a swell, and it wasn’t until later in the day that things calmed down and he had a good time reeling in the pla daeng before the end.  Dene reckoned he’d caught about ten kilos, with some nice yellowtail and snapper.

On the 27th, the skipper took us clear of Ko Khram and then motored a long way north across the shipping route into some quite rough conditions which some of us found hard going, especially as we weren’t getting many bites.  The exception was Dang, who soon had more than dozen fish in her bucket, and hardly stopped reeling them in all day, so that she and husband Solly went home with well over 20 kilos.

Dene once again had a decent haul, including a nice skipjack, and Charlie landed a small shark.  In the afternoon we anchored in some quieter water around the Ko Ran Kwian rocks and had a lively spell catching mostly snapper and pla daeng.

In the past the prevailing attitude seems to have been that even the smallest fish are fair game, because they can go in the Tom Yam pot.  The more conservation-minded of us are starting to feel that anything smaller than, say 15cm.(6″) should go back in the water, otherwise the stock of bigger fish is bound to decrease.  Of course, the few monthly excursions of Pattaya Sports Club will make no difference either way to the gross commercial overfishing that is taking place in the Gulf, but perhaps we should set an example.

Our July/August 20% discount promotion is proving highly successful, as the next trip on Saturday August 10th is fully subscribed.  We still have a few vacancies on Tues. 20th and Sat.24th.  Fees for this period are PSC Members 1200 baht, non-members 1400 baht.
