July 2015 PAGS Tournament at Greenwood

Another day dawned and golfers descended en masse on the Greenwood course for the July 29 PAGS tournament.  The day’s field of 77 players, which included 7 ladies, had an eye on the weather conditions, and with good reason too, as a storm blew through for about 30 minutes just after 11:00am.

We played the C & A combination, with the C course being a little under par from its usual high state of condition.  Greens were running quite slow, and there must have been some recent rain as fairways were also quite long.  The A loop was back to the expectations here at Greenwood; greens were running smooth and true while fairways were also more closely mown than on C.

Petri Rovali (left) was the Low Gross & A Flight winner.

Petri Rovali (h/cap 8) shot the undoubted round of the day, winning the Low Gross with a fine 80, while his score of 36 points was also good enough to pick up top spot in the A Flight.

Another headlining score of the day went to the C Flight winner, Larry Laverdenne (24), with a fine 37 points, to be the only player on the day to exceed his handicap.   The ladies winner was Impeng Paphawee (22) with 35 points, edging Yuza Phaohom on count back 18/16.  Yuza gained some solace with her technical prize win on C6.

Minor placings in A Flight required a series of count backs after 4 players recorded 33 points.  Jeff Wylie (8) with 19 on the back nine got second while George Cullen (12) took third after defeating Craig Duncan on the last 6 holes (12/11) after both had 18 on the back nine.  Tom Thompson was eliminated earlier with a back nine of just 15 points.

B flight was also a tightly contested affair with Gary Saunders (16) on 35 points the clear winner, while another series of count backs was required to settle the placings after 3 players had 34 points.  Patrice Bardy (18) with his back nine of 20 was second while Graham Shand (20) edged Donal on the back six, 15/13 after both had 18 on the back nine.

Jeff Wylie (right) won 2 technical prizes.

In the C flight, there was a clear second for Jan Johansson (26) with his 36 points, while the bronze again required count backs; John Dearden (21) just getting the better of Sami Sarajari 13/10 on the last 6 holes after both had signed for 30 points.

Again this month a few honourable mentions will be thrown out, this time to Craig Duncan, Mike Allidi, Gary Saunders & Jeff Wylie who each picked up the maximum 2 technical prizes, well done to all.  It was pleasing to see 12 y/o Quentin join us on the day and score an approach prize on the long par-3 third.

Dave and his team once again did a tip top job in the tucker department, with plenty of non-golfers coming along to enjoy the social atmosphere of the evening with their golfing partners, family & friends.  As always, there is only 1 person to blame if you go home hungry from Shenanigans Jomtien after a PAGS presentation.

The next tournament will be held at Crystal Bay on 26th August.  Contact Shane on 085 945 9689 to ensure your preferred tee time.

The ladies enjoyed their day out in the July PAGS tournament at Greenwood.
