PSC Golf from Tropical Golf Group

Monday, Dec. 28, Bangpra – Stableford

We knew we were going to be in for a funny day when we approached the turn into the golf course and the road was covered with monkeys, causing general mayhem.  After a quick change we were also very surprised to be directed to the 10th tee for our start.  We had a large turnout for the day and even off the 10th tee we were late so we knew this was going to be a long day.

It proved to be a normal day in High Season as we had to wait for every shot.  Meanwhile the course was packed with troops of monkeys who were everywhere.  With so many young around the big males seemed a bit tired out and were no problem.

Dick Warberg (centre) presents prizes to MBMG Group golfer of the year Brian Parish (left) and golfer of the month Mashi Kaneta.

The first nine holes were very slow, but after the turn the players in front disappeared and we were able to get a move on.  The course itself was in good condition considering the amount of golf being played of late and the greens were very good, with the ball rolling along quite nicely.  Well we finally got around and really appreciated a nice shower.

This was a special day as not only was it the MBMG Group golfer of the month award day but also golfer of the year as well; both were still in the balance and dependent on the day’s results.

In the A Flight, 0 to 19, the winner was Mashi Kaneta with 37 points ahead of Landis Brooks in second with 35.  Taking third was Brian Parish with 34 points and in fourth was Richard Kubicki with 33.

Dick Warberg was the winner in the B Flight with 36 points ahead of Nigel Perry in second with 35.  We then had a count back on 30 points that saw Tom Cotton in third and Tom McDowell fourth.

Then time for the big ones: A count back ruled out Nigel Perry for the gollfer of the month title so the award went to Mashi Kaneta with his last gasp win on the day.

Finally the big one, and with a consistent performance throughout the year the MBMG Group golfer of the year was Brian Parish by a clear margin.  Well done indeed and well deserved!  Thank you MBMG for once again sponsoring the event and we had a drink to them.

Near Pins: Rob Brown, AVD, Walter Baechli, Thorsten Bischoff.

Long Putts: Yoshi, Tom Herrington.

Wednesday, Dec. 30, Silky Oak – Stableford

As another fine year came to an end the Tropical golfers assembled for their annual visit to Silky Oak and the much anticipated feast afterwards.  It’s a tradition to play this course at the end of the year, and what a treat it is.  A very interesting layout combined with excellent conditions makes for a memorable day.  The golfers really enjoy playing this course, and it would show in the scores -and how!  Great scores were the order of the day, and one in particular!

Without further ado the big winner of the day was Nigel Perry (H/cap 24) with a stratospheric 46 points.  We all get in the zone once in a great while and it was Nigel’s turn on this day.  Second place went to Torsten Bischoff (29) with a normally winning 42 points, followed by Dave Marshall (12) with 41, and who would think that Richard Kubicki’s (11) 40 points would only be good for fourth place?  Great golf guys!

Near Pins: Rob Brown, Nigel Perry (2), Andre Van Dyk, Dave Cooper.

Long Putts: John Davis, Rob Brown.

After the round the Tropical Golfers were treated to a fine feast by the BJ’s Holiday Lodge.  Somehow there were enough bottles of wine so that everyone left with a bottle and a smile.

It is also the time to give a huge thanks to BJ’s Holiday Lodge for hosting the Tropical golfers.  The owners and staff have been more than gracious and accommodating throughout the year and the group is lucky to have them.  Also extra big thanks and a toast to Derek and Dick for organizing the golf for another year despite the difficulties of managing a handful of sometimes grumpy old men.  And all for free.  Happy New Year!
