Wednesday, Nov. 8, Greenwood – Stableford

1st John Anderson (30) 39pts

2nd John Mason (26) 38pts

3rd Tony Browne (21) 37pts

4th John Pierrel (12) 36pts

18 players made the journey up the 331 to Greenwood Golf Course for the second time in three weeks.  This is not a bad thing, as this course is always in very good condition, although a tad more expensive this time as “high season” pricing kicks in.

The greens on “A” course were running quickly, but the “B” course had been recently cored and sanded, so we needed to adjust our putting to the slower speed.

After wearing more than enough of “wigs” for the least flattering score of the day, John Anderson turned the tables to take out the overall first place with a handicap beating 39 points, and a try on of the green jacket.

John Mason came second, lamenting the shots that got away, but a fine 38 points to his score card.

Tony Browne, fresh from a fourth place in the Poppy Day Golf, (partnered with John Anderson) came into third place here with another good score of 37 points, while John Pierrel won a count-back for fourth, beating unlucky John Harrison, both with 36 points.

We placed near pin markers on each of the par 3s, but, due to some controversy and great debate, this scribe does not know the final results.

The best front and back nines for non-winners came respectively from Rod Stevens (16pts) and Mike Firkin (20pts).

Friday, Nov. 10, Phoenix – Stableford

A Flight

1st Walter Baechli (17) 36pts

2nd Mike Davies(18) 32pts

3rd Paul Chesney (19) 31pts

B Flight

1st Peter Henshaw (24) 36pts

2nd Mike Jeffreys (21) 36pts

3rd Ken Hole (22) 35pts

Phoenix was the winner when Pattaya CC decided to ask an extortionate high season fee thus obliging us to redirect there on Friday to play a stableford competition on the Mountain and quirky Lakes nines.

The course was in good condition with grassed fairways and steady greens but the peculiarly overfilled soft bunkers still pose problems.  A bright warm day soon turned into a stormy one and the clubhouse siren summoned golfers off the course for almost an hour after nine holes.  This had obvious effects on the scores and also saw a fifth of the field withdraw for an early shower.

In the top flight new member Paul Chesney put his debut round horrors behind him and won a count-back for third place with 31 points, his playing partner Mike Davies going one better for second with 32 points.  The winner was golf’s fashion guru Walter Baechli with a fine 36 points.

In the second flight tight scores saw Ken Hole take third place with 35 points, one behind Mike Jeffreys on 36 points and the count-back winner Peter Henshaw.

Consolation winners were Phil Davies (best front nine with 18 points) and Terry Mangan’s excellent back nine of nineteen points.  The wig was awarded to Mav Lawless, not for his card but for reasons concerning a recent experience in a barber’s chair!
