The 2015 TRGG tour of Hua Hin was an outstanding success and if reports by a number of the participants are to be believed was well organized and a great deal of fun, which was good to hear.  Needless to say some of the tales of derring do fall under the old adage “what goes on tour stays on tour” and must remain secret to all but a few.  However, if anyone wishes to learn more they can contact me and offer to cross my palm with silver.

The golf on tour is always the same, some take it deadly seriously and some treat it as secondary consideration to having a good time and staying out till dawn and this past week seems to have been no exception.  What was good to see from the posted results was that the top three positions in the four days of competition were shared around by eight of the competitors, so most got the chance of a bit of glory and nobody completely dominated proceedings.

Graham Hurdon (centre) is congratulated by TRGG bosses Derek Thorogood and Billy Allan.

Having said that, as the week developed two players emerged to fight out a titanic duel on the last day to decide who was going to walk off with the Hua Hin Trophy, which incidentally, had accidentally been left on someone’s kitchen table in Pattaya and didn’t actually appear at the presentation ceremony in Hua Hin (Oops).

Monday, Sept. 7, Banyan G.C. – Stableford

The week’s competitions got underway on Monday at Banyan Golf Club and it was one of the Irish contingent who got off to a winning start.  Michael Maguire shot the best score of the day and was the only player to better his handicap, so well done Michael.

Big boss Derek Thorogood came in second with a very respectable 36 points and one of the week’s favourites to walk off with the trophy, Poopay Lamthong, finished in third place on 34.

1st Michael Maguire (23) 38pts

2nd Derek Thorogood (14) 36pts

3rd Tewin Lamthong (11) 34pts

Tuesday, Sept. 8, Sea Pines G.C. – Stableford

On Tuesday it was the turn of Sea Pines Golf Club to provide the second golfing challenge of the tour.  Graham Hurdon, the unassuming Cornishman and one of the dark horses for the week, showed he meant business by taking first place on 36 points.  Robert Cannon shot into second place on the day and Rungratree Cox, last year’s winner of the Trophy got her challenge underway by finishing in third place.

1st Graham Hurdon (9) 36pts

2nd Robert Cannon (19) 35pts

3rd Rungratree Cox (8) 33pts

Thursday, Sept. 10, Springfield G.C. – Stableford

After the Wednesday rest day the competition resumed on Thursday at Springfield Golf Club (A and B courses).  This is when the competition really started to heat up and there was some very high scoring.

Charlie Cox dominated the day, returning with 43 points while Graham Hurdon followed in just behind on 41 and Poopay Lamthong took third spot with 39.

1st Charlie Cox (15) 43pts

2nd Graham Hurdon (9) 41pts

3rd Tewin Lamthong (11) 39pts

Friday, Sept. 11, Imperial Lake View G.C. – Stableford

And so the event moved to a conclusion on Friday at Imperial Lake View Golf Club.  Calculators were needed to determine who the front runners were and it transpired that Graham Hurdon lay just ahead of Tewin Poopay Lamthong, and they were paired together in the last group.

It was nip and tuck all the way and although Poopay Lamthong won the day’s competition she did not do quite enough to overhaul Graham Hurdon who finished in second place on the day.  Graham’s wife Carmen finished in third place.

Many congratulations to Graham Hurdon on winning an enthralling contest and better luck next year to Poopay.

1st Tewin Lamthong (10) 39pts

2nd Graham Hurdon (8) 38pts

3rd Carmen Hurdon (17) 34pts
