An extremely tough week on the local courses started at the immaculately presented Khao Kheow B and C layout, but unfortunately the condition of the course did not assist the hopefuls in even equaling the par as the wind and difficulty of the greens conspired to defeat them all.

The best of the day, and indeed the week, was Danny Miller’s one over handicap round to take the first division top spot, three clear of a very good field of low handicappers, which underlined the severity of the day as the CSS of the day at plus one confirmed.

Keith Evans led in a trio at four over with a better count back of 18, which left Russell Exley in third with 16 and Alan Hanlon in fourth with 14.

The second division was headed by Patrick Scullion, taking his first win after several weeks of effort both on the course and in the gym, and for once not heavily handicapped with extra bottles of the house red from the previous evening.  His 12 on the back six was enough to ensure victory after he had tied the nine at 16 apiece with Al Rolnik, as the latter could glean just 10, which left him in second spot.

Peter Skinner and Patrick Scullion.

Dave McCormack and fellow newcomer Tim Morgan also had to go through the count back system to find Dave with 18 and Tim with 17, placing them in third and fourth respectively.

Keith Evans had the sole 2 in the first division whilst Walter O’Keefe had the only one in the second division to sweep the roll over pool.

CSS 75 (counting)

Division 1 (0-13)

1st Alan Hanlon (13) 31pts

2nd Danny Miller (8) 30pts

3rd Russell Exley (8) 30pts

Another solid turnout demanded the formation of two divisions once again and with a fair number of low handicappers in the field the first division was cut at 13 and below for the second occasion in a row.

Once again the course was found to be the master of all with the CSS for the day going out three strokes to 75 as the heavy conditions, a brisk breeze and very tricky greens with one or two nightmare pin placements took their toll on the field.

The first division was taken by Alan Hanlon at five over handicap as he finished very strongly with nine of the points coming on the last four holes, which was just sufficient to see of the close challenges of Danny Miller and Russell Exley in second and third spots.  Danny won a count back over Russell for second with a better 14 to 12 and his card could have been so much better if not for the par threes on which he amassed a very meager one point from the four holes.

Bruce Kusyk took fourth, one shot back and Craig Elliott fifth another one behind.

The second division saw the best score of the day returned by the in-form Walter O’Keefe who singlehandedly stopped the day being a non-counting event as he led in Terry Hodgkiss by two for the win.

Shuichi Kodaka led a three-way count back for third with the best 18 as Patrick Scullion took fourth with 17 and Markku Tynell fifth with 16.

There were no 2’s in the first division but George Pittam had the sole one in the second division.

Prior to the presentations it was announced that following the recent delivery to The Haven of the long standing back order for “Round Tuits”, there were now an additional sixteen golf lockers available for rent either weekly, monthly or yearly, now that the in-house carpenter had finally got around to it.

1st Markku Tynell (22) 31pts

2nd Don Everett 919) 29pts

3rd Patrick Scullion (22) 27pts

4th Russell Gilroy (18) 27pts

Once again two divisions were required but with the cut being made at 16 and below as a few of the lower handicappers decided to take a rest for the day.  The CSS for the day spiraled up two strokes only being saved a non-counting tag as another IPGC group managed to get a couple of players to make the grade of within two of handicap after the course was found to be extremely wet following continuous overnight rain, which made the 6,600 yard layout seem about 400 yards longer.

The first division went to Peter Skinner with a score that he thought was in the cellar but turned out to be top dog by three from a three-way count back that Kevin Townsend led with a better 15, followed by James Hawley in third who had to beat Walter O’Keefe on the back six by 11 to 8 after they had tied the nine at 12 apiece.

The second division was won by Markku Tynell by two points ahead of Don Everett in second, with Patrick Scullion getting his third mention of the week in third and Russell Gilroy in fourth after the former had won a count back with a better 11 to 10 following two good opening nines.

Once again there were no 2’s in the first division but Markku Tynell defied the odds makers with one in the second division.
