Monday, August 8, Burapha – Stableford

With 16 players taking on Siam Plantation, our smaller than usual Monday Burapha group battled it out in one division, playing mostly from the white tees today.  With cloudy overcast weather and not too hot, it was a perfect day for scoring well, and a third of the field played better or equal than handicap.

Playing from the silver tees, Bill Peach again scored well to finish with 38 points in fourth while Jimmy Little played great to finish in third after losing a count back to John Fitzgerald, both with 39 points each.  The big winner of this day was Barry Copestake whose 40 points got him to top spot.

Pat Regan and Barry Copestake each recorded a ‘2’ to share a decent pot.

Tuesday, August 9, Laem Chabang – Stableford

It was another beautiful day at Laem Chabang with 10 players taking on the A & B course.  In third place came Darren Yates with 30 points then we had a gap of five points to Wez Smart in the runner-up position on 35.  Ron Dickie redeemed himself from Monday’s bad round at Plantation to win the day with a great 77 gross and 37 points.

Friday, August 12, Green Valley – Stableford

Our usual Friday outing at Green Valley is greeted by changes on a weekly basis on the first tee.  A shortened carry was evident this day and signs of grass being planted after the shorter carry will make our higher handicappers happy.  For the time being, we treat the area as GUR and give anyone who lands in that area relief to the red tee or nearest point of relief, without penalty.

Our Green Valley field was a bit depleted since we also had a parallel tour group playing St. Andrews, so with the B division being 18-handicap and up, we had 12 players contesting that division.  Scores were generally very good today and in third place on count back was Bruce McAdam.  Eng Cottrell continued her good form and scored a great 39 points, even though her handicap has reduced from last week.  Edging out Eng on count back was Bob Mattes who played great to finish in first place with his 39 points and 19 on the back nine.

In the A division, Jack Butler had his second outing with the Outback and played well again, scoring a great 37 points to finish third.  Beating jack on count back was Wally Brown who scored well again.  The day however belonged to Peter le Noury, scoring a great 40 points to take top honours.

Saturday, August 13, Burapha – Skins

Our pot & skins Saturday format is gaining good traction and what a great bunch of regular Saturday players they are.  This format encourages a great bit of camaraderie and is not serious at all.  The rules are a bit more matchplay lenient and it’s allowed to give your playing partners a ‘gimme’.  Don’t be surprised if you hear David play a bit of rock music, or be offered a San Miguel on the first tee.

Whilst the game is played in earnest, be willing to have a bit of good laughter as you make your way around with a great bunch of blokes. Another feature of our Saturday golf is that (by popular choice), winnings are drunk at the bar, and if you are not there, the boys will have a few on your behalf!

From the 14 players this week, the lowest score was by Wez Smart who had a tremendous game albeit from the girly tees by his standards.  He scored an awesome 77 gross to finish with 42 points.  What makes things even better is that he scooped up 8 skins, and the big win combined with the skins off course prompted a bell ring, which set the tone for the rest of the day (and ended up with Craig Blacklock and Shaun Pullen doing 80’s soul rock shuffles by 9pm!)

Other skins: Duncan Rocchi (3), Darren Yates and Daryl Clark (2 each), Neil Farrell, Per L๖vgren and Craig Blacklock (1 each).
