Not quite so many golfers on the course at Green Valley this Sunday as in recent weeks, which was probably just as well as our numbers swelled and required two flights, with the cut off set at 19 and below for the A Flight.  The heat and high humidity was still with us and the course was in rather good condition.

Irishman Christy ‘good’ Knight was on song as he returned an excellent 42 points that was good for the top spot in B Flight and the man of the match honours.  Christy was seven strokes clear of his good friend and Co. Dublin resident Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw.  Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick put a stop to it being an all Irish flight as he was the Queen’s sole representative on the podium with 32 points.

A Flight was the domain of our good friend from the United States of America, Andrew Kostopoulis, who topped the flight with a sound 39 points.  Fellow American ‘Big’ Jim Brackett took the silver with a steady 35 point return.  Three golfers vied for the third podium spot; the ever-present Connie Walsh, Paul Heyworth and Jimmy ‘AK 47’ Bell and when the divots had settled it was Connie who got to stand on the podium, leaving Paul and Jim at sea level and pot-less.

Monday, August 22, Pleasant Valley – Stableford

1st Jody Meade (18) 40pts

2nd Peter Henshaw (24) 39pts

3rd Bernard Green (29) 38pts

A small but select group hit the road to go and take on the small but very challenging Pleasant Valley.  The course was in great condition and the greens were fast and true.  The weather was once again very hot and humid.

There were some fine scores, especially from Jody Meade who decided to extend his stay here in the Land of Smiles and it proved to be a wise idea as he produced a fine 40 points for the match honours and the top podium spot.

Jody was followed up the podium steps very closely by Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw a shot in arrears while Bernard Green closed the flight a further shot back.  Three players missed the podium with even par rounds.

Wednesday, August 24, Treasure Hill – Stableford

1st Peter Henshaw (26) 41pts

2nd Ken Hole (20) 38pts

3rd Takeshi Hakozaki (16) 35pts

Wednesday saw a fair crowd travel up the 331 highway to the testing Treasure Hill Golf Club.  Set amongst rolling tree lined fairways this course is one of the most demanding in the area, play well here and you can tackle any of the local courses.

Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw followed Sunday and Monday’s second place finishes by firing a man of the match 41 points.  Peter’s stellar performance was three clear of Ken ‘he’s always there or there about’s’ Hole, and three more clear of our good friend Takeshi Hakozaki.

Friday, August 26, Mt. Shadow – Stableford

1st Christy Knight (21) 35pts

2nd Ken Hole (17) 34pts

3rd Peter Henshaw (23) 34pts

Rolling grey clouds and rumbling skies kept a few of the less hardy competitors in their beds for an opportunity to play a singles event at arguably one of the toughest courses in the area, but with fair rates on offer for green fees there were nearly enough players for two divisions, but not quite.   The large numbers meant there were four flight spots up for grabs but in the event, none of the hopefuls could even match par.

Co. Dublin’s favourite son Christy ‘good’ Knight finished the week as he started it, winning A Flight and taking the man of the match honours with 35 points.  The two most consistent players this year went head to head in a count back for second spot, Ken Hole and Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw, both with 34 points.  Ken took the silver by virtue of a better back nine score of 17 to Peter’s 15 points.  Mind you, Peter was quite happy to receive the bronze as this made it four pay-window trips this week.  John Harrison closed the flight with 33 points.
