The Eastern Economic Corridor Commission reaffirmed its role in promoting tourism in Pattaya even as this year’s tourism revenue likely won’t meet projections.

Pattaya Mayor Poramet Ngampichet said Sept. 20 that the city wants the EEC to be a partner in expensive projects on education and wellness centers that would drive a new segment of tourists to the area.

Pattaya, however, continues to rely on domestic tourists, as foreigners comprise only a small portion of the city’s visitors.
The Tourism and Sports Ministry had predicted Thailand would see 1.5 trillion baht in tourism revenue. That projection has now been cut to 1.2 trillion baht.

So far this year, the country tourism has generated 1.08 trillion baht, or 6% of Thailand’s gross domestic product. Of that income, 670 billion baht came from domestic tourists.
