BANGKOK, 19 September 2011 – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has indicated that the eastern part of the capital is being affected by flood and a budget of 1 billion THB has been prepared for solving flood problems in the long run.
After convening with related authorities, Deputy Bangkok Governor Pornthep Techapaiboon disclosed that the flood situation was still critical in some areas of Bangkok, especially eastern districts like Min Buri, Lat Krabang, Nong Chok and Khlong Sam Wa. The local district offices have thus been assigned to ready their flood prevention equipment, including water pumps and sandbags.
Moreover, a 1-billion-THB emergency budget has been set aside by the BMA in order to be spent on improving the drainage system and dredging canals in the capital. As for a number of schools in low-lying areas, sandbags will be supplied for their protection from inundation for the time being in a bid to allow all classes to resume as usual.
Mr Pornthep assured that all agencies related to water management under the supervision of the BMA were coordinating closely with the Government on solving flood problems in a systematic and concrete manner. He added that flood relief bags would soon be distributed to people in flooded areas while any assistance could be requested via Hotline 1555.
