PATTAYA, Thailand – Heavy rain flooded sections of Sukhumvit Road in South Pattaya on October 19, causing traffic congestion opposite Lotus’s shopping center and forcing officials to close part of the left-hand lane. At around 3 p.m., accumulated rainwater covered the road surface, slowing vehicles and causing traffic to back up in several areas. The left lane was particularly affected, prompting officials to partially close it to reduce accident risks.
Motorcycles and smaller vehicles faced difficulties passing through the flooded section, with drivers urged to proceed cautiously. Pattaya’s special affairs and municipal enforcement officers were deployed to manage traffic, maintain order and assist motorists travelling through the affected area.
Officials advised drivers to reduce speed, maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead and avoid driving through floodwater of unknown depth. Motorists were encouraged to use alternative routes if water levels made passage unsafe. The Thai Meteorological Department’s October 19 forecast predicted thunderstorms across approximately 70% of the eastern region, with isolated heavy rain in Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat. Temperatures were expected to range from 23–25°C to 32–34°C.
Rain is forecast to continue across 60–70% of the eastern region from October 19–23. Between October 21 and 25, rainfall is expected to increase in many parts of Thailand, including the East, with isolated heavy to very heavy rain possible. Residents are advised to monitor weather updates and remain alert to the risk of flash floods and runoff, particularly in low-lying areas and locations prone to repeated flooding.
