KANCHANABURI, Thailand – Wildlife rangers have spotted a rare rufous-necked hornbill perched on a tree branch and calling out in the rainforest of Thung Yai Naresuan West Wildlife Sanctuary, highlighting the importance of protecting Thailand’s remaining forest habitats.

Supharuek Klanprasert, chief of the sanctuary in Kanchanaburi province, said the bird was seen during a patrol to prevent and suppress illegal activities involving natural resources and wildlife.


The rufous-necked hornbill (Aceros nipalensis) is a rare species that plays an important role in forest ecosystems, particularly by dispersing seeds and helping maintain forest regeneration and biodiversity.

The sighting brought encouragement to the rangers, who work to protect the sanctuary and provide safe habitats for wildlife. Officials said regular patrols serve not only to prevent illegal activities but also to help preserve biodiversity and ensure that rare wildlife can continue to thrive in its natural environment.

The sighting of the rare rufous-necked hornbill gave Thung Yai Naresuan West wildlife rangers a welcome boost, highlighting the value of their efforts to protect the forest and its wildlife.
