BANGKOK, Thailand – The Royal Irrigation Department (RID) is warning communities in four provinces along the Mae Klong River to prepare for rising water levels, as additional rainfall could require higher discharge from Mae Klong Dam. The warning covers Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Samut Songkhram, and Samut Sakhon, especially low-lying riverside areas.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) forecasts thunderstorms, strong winds, hail, and heavy to very heavy rain in parts of upper Thailand, with rainfall expected to increase from October 8–13. This could send more water from the Khwae Noi and Khwae Yai rivers into the Mae Klong River.
Discharge below Mae Klong Dam could exceed 1,200 cubic meters per second, depending on rainfall and incoming water volumes. The RID will adjust releases based on actual conditions to manage increased flow through the river system.
Residents and businesses along the Mae Klong River are advised to monitor conditions closely, check vulnerable areas, and move belongings and valuables to higher ground if necessary. Communities are also being urged to prepare for possible increases in river levels as weather and water conditions develop. (NNT)
