Tourism and transport agencies sign a Letter of Intent to let eligible transit passengers leave the airport, explore nearby destinations and return for onward flights.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Tourism and transport authorities are developing a program that allows eligible transfer and transit passengers to leave airports during longer connections and explore nearby destinations before returning for their onward flights. The program turns waiting time into tourism activity and spending while supporting Thailand’s plans to become a regional aviation and tourism hub.

Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn and Deputy Transport Minister Phattrapong Phattraprasit presided over the signing of a Letter of Intent on October 5. The Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Department of Airports will work with the Airlines Association of Thailand, Thai Airways International, Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel Company Limited, and Kasetsart University to develop the program.

Under the Amazing Thailand Transfer Passenger Privilege project, travelers will be offered benefits and short excursions tailored to the time available between connecting flights. Initial concepts include City Express, Food Express, and Wellness Express, giving passengers opportunities to explore local attractions, Thai cuisine, and wellness offerings while ensuring they have sufficient time to return to the airport.

TAT will coordinate participating agencies and businesses to create smooth connections between airports, attractions, and tourism services. The program is expected to generate additional spending for restaurants, retailers, local communities, and tourism operators while allowing travelers passing through Thailand to experience the country even when it is not their final destination.
