PATTAYA, Thailand – The Meteorological Department has issued its 8th warning, alerting that upper Thailand will experience summer thunderstorms from April 18 to 20. The conditions are expected to bring thunderstorms, strong gusty winds, and isolated hail, with possible lightning in some areas.
The weather system is caused by a moderate high-pressure area from China extending over the South China Sea, strengthening southerly and southeasterly winds across lower northeastern, eastern Thailand, and the upper Gulf of Thailand. Meanwhile, much of the country is experiencing hot to very hot conditions, creating unstable atmospheric conditions.
Authorities have advised the public in upper Thailand to beware of dangerous weather, avoid open areas, large trees, and weak structures, and secure outdoor belongings. Farmers have also been urged to reinforce fruit trees, protect livestock, and prepare for possible agricultural damage due to sudden storms.
At the same time, Thailand’s eastern region, including Pattaya, is preparing for one of the busiest days of the Songkran festival – April 19, known locally as “Wan Lai Pattaya,” the city’s biggest water festival day.
Despite the weather warning, Pattaya is expected to be packed with tourists from Thailand and abroad. Beach Road and surrounding streets will be transformed into a full-scale water celebration zone, with heavy traffic, dense crowds, and non-stop water fights continuing until midnight, before the city gradually returns to normal.
However, the possibility of summer thunderstorms may affect parts of the day, particularly in eastern coastal provinces, including Pattaya and the upper Gulf area, with sudden rain and strong winds possible during peak celebrations.
Officials are urging residents and tourists to stay cautious of changing weather conditions, avoid unsafe shelter during storms, and follow official updates while continuing festival activities.
For Pattaya, April 19 remains the peak “unleashed” day of Songkran – a final burst of energy, color, and chaos before the city winds down after midnight and begins returning to calm once again.
