Ban Phaeo gourami has been officially registered as a Geographical Indication product, highlighting its sweet taste, firm texture, and traditional farming methods while boosting the local economy in Samut Sakhon.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) has registered “Ban Phaeo gourami” as a Geographical Indication (GI) product, adding value to agricultural goods and supporting local economic growth.

The product becomes the fourth GI item from Samut Sakhon province, alongside Ban Phaeo golden longan, Nam Hom (aromatic) coconut, and coconut inflorescence juice. The designation confirms its connection to the local area and its distinct characteristics, supported by natural conditions and traditional farming practices.

Ban Phaeo gourami is known for its quality due to the province’s coastal lowland environment and well-developed irrigation system, which provides nutrient-rich, slightly brackish water. Combined with long-standing aquaculture techniques, the fish develops firm, tender flesh and a naturally sweet taste when cooked. Processed products, including sun-dried and salted gourami, are prepared using traditional methods that preserve texture and flavor.

Annual production is estimated at 8 million kilograms, generating up to 740 million baht for the local economy. Efforts are underway to expand distribution through retail outlets, trade events, and online platforms, while also linking GI products with tourism to create additional income opportunities. Thailand currently has 256 registered GI products, generating over 115 billion baht each year in economic value nationwide. (NNT)
