PATTAYA, Thailand – Pattaya City officials have launched an urgent rescue operation for around 30 stray dogs left stranded on a large private plot of land with no trees, shelter, food, or water after animal welfare volunteers raised concerns over their living conditions.

On April 17, Mayor Poramet Ngampichet led a team of city officials, veterinarians, and support staff to inspect the site, located opposite the Pattaya Provincial Court, Thappraya Road, Jomtien.

According to city officials, the abandoned land spans more than 111 rai and was previously home to around 60 stray dogs. Local animal welfare volunteer “Khun Ooh” had regularly provided food for the dogs, but after the landowner fenced off and cleared the site, the animals were left trapped with little access to food and no protection from the heat or rain.

Officials said around 30 dogs remain at the site, as some had already been relocated by volunteers before Pattaya City stepped in.

Pattaya officials carefully pull puppies from a sand hole where they had been sheltering with their mother on the exposed private land.

During the inspection, the team found a mother dog caring for four puppies in a hole dug into the ground for shelter. The puppies were immediately taken to a Pattaya City animal shelter for temporary care.

Authorities expect the relocation of the remaining dogs to take no more than 15 days. In the meantime, Pattaya City has negotiated with those overseeing the land to allow access for feeding and welfare checks while larger cages are brought in to safely move the animals.

Mayor Poramet said the situation was urgent because the wide-open area made the use of tranquilizers difficult and potentially unsafe. Instead, city veterinarians and engineering teams will install tents and trapping cages to safely rescue the dogs without causing additional stress or danger.

The barren private plot, stripped of trees and fenced off, has left dozens of stray dogs exposed to intense heat with little access to food or water.

Once rescued, the dogs will be relocated to the volunteer’s dog shelter, which covers more than two rai and already cares for around 80 dogs.
