BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand has been ranked the world’s top travel destination for April 2026, driven by strong international interest in the Songkran Festival.
Culture Minister Sabeeda Thaised reported that this year’s celebrations have attracted widespread global attention, with projections of at least 6.5 million participants nationwide, including both domestic and international visitors. Economic activity linked to the festival is expected to exceed 30 billion baht, supported by travel, tourism, and related spending.
Songkran continues to be a major cultural attraction, known for its mix of water festivities, family reunions, and public celebrations. Authorities say the appeal lies in its ability to create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors while preserving long-standing traditions. Celebrations are still underway in several provinces, including Chonburi, Samut Prakan, Uthai Thani, and Nan, extending travel activity beyond the main holiday period.
At the same time, Thai culture has gained greater international visibility through global branding, including the release of a Nike Dunk Low “Som Tum” sneaker inspired by the traditional Thai dish. The design incorporates colors and elements linked to papaya salad and Thai lifestyle motifs, signaling growing international interest in Thai identity across the fashion and creative sectors.
