PATTAYA, Thailand – Police in Pattaya have launched a major road safety campaign ahead of the Songkran and Wan Lai celebrations, aiming to reduce accidents by promoting full helmet use among motorcyclists.

The initiative, titled “Safe Driving, 100% Helmet Use,” was officially opened at Pattaya Beach by Pol Lt Gen Chatchai Surachetpong, Commissioner of Provincial Police Region 2, alongside local officials, police officers, and volunteers.

Authorities say Pattaya’s status as a major tourist destination leads to consistently heavy traffic, particularly involving motorcycles, which remain one of the highest-risk vehicle types for road accidents. A key contributing factor, officials noted, is the continued failure of many riders to wear helmets.

The campaign focuses on raising awareness, strengthening traffic discipline, and enforcing road safety laws more strictly and consistently. Beach Road has been designated as a pilot area, where officers will combine enforcement with public outreach efforts.

As part of the initiative, helmets are being distributed to the public to encourage safer riding habits, alongside ongoing campaigns reminding drivers to obey traffic laws, avoid speeding, respect traffic signals, and always wear protective gear.

Officials also stressed the importance of not drinking and driving during the festive period, as Pattaya prepares for increased traffic and large crowds during Songkran.

The campaign forms part of broader efforts to reduce road injuries and fatalities during one of Thailand’s busiest and most accident-prone holiday periods.
