BANGKOK, Thailand – Foreign Affairs Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow outlined Thailand’s diplomatic strategies in response to the ongoing Middle East conflict at the “Meet the Press” forum on March 28, 2026. He detailed immediate measures to protect over 100,000 Thai nationals in the region and safeguard national energy and supply chain interests.
A diplomatic “War Room” was set up immediately after hostilities began. Priority was given to 65,000 Thais in Israel and about 300 in high-risk areas of Iran. The Minister described a complex evacuation from Iran, which required a 10-hour overland journey to the Turkish border, supported by a special unit from the Thai Embassy in Ankara. The Ministry coordinated with Iran, Israel, and the United States to establish non-combat corridors for safe passage. So far, 1,500 Thais have been repatriated.
The Minister confirmed that Thailand has sufficient fuel reserves but is using diplomatic channels to secure additional energy supplies. The Ministry has begun high-level talks with potential suppliers in Brazil, Nigeria, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan. The Ministry of Energy and PTT Public Company Limited will conduct further technical negotiations.
Regarding the Strait of Hormuz closure, the Minister expressed serious concern about its effect on oil, gas, and fertilizer transport. After the attack on the vessel Mayuree Naree, the Ministry worked with Omani authorities to rescue 20 crew members. Efforts are ongoing to determine the status of the three remaining crew members held by Iranian authorities.
Minister Sihasak reiterated to his Iranian counterpart that Thailand is neutral and, under international law, has the right to safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. A pre-notification system with Iran has already enabled the safe transit of vessels owned by Bangchak and SCG.
A Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting was convened to call for a swift end to hostilities. Minister Sihasak proposed a long-term regional framework for energy and food security, urging ASEAN members to strengthen collective preparedness for future global disruptions. (NNT)
