BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered all provinces and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to tighten fire and accident prevention measures during the upcoming Chinese New Year festival, a period associated with higher safety risks from traditional activities such as lighting incense and candles, burning joss paper, and setting off firecrackers.
Provincial authorities have been instructed to strengthen preparedness by surveying fire-prone areas, conducting emergency response drills, and ensuring readiness for immediate action. Inspections are also required at community areas, business premises, buildings, transport routes, and Chinese New Year event venues, including riverbank locations, floating platforms, piers, and passenger boats. Any unsafe conditions must be addressed without delay.
Local administrations have also been directed to promote reduced or suspended burning activities during the festival to help curb air pollution and lower PM2.5 levels. Public awareness efforts are expected to encourage safer practices while respecting cultural traditions.
In addition, authorities have been told to improve traffic management in crowded areas to prevent accidents. The measures seek to ensure that Chinese New Year celebrations proceed safely and smoothly, protecting lives, property, and public well-being throughout the holiday period. (NNT)
