PATTAYA, Thailand – A 69-year-old woman was arrested for drunk driving after crashing her sedan into a parked vehicle while driving against traffic for nearly one kilometer along Sukhumvit Road in Sattahip on Sunday afternoon (Feb 1).
Police from Sattahip Police Station were notified of the accident at around 1:30 p.m. and responded to the scene near a dynamo repair shop on the inbound lane toward Sattahip, just before the Bang Saray traffic light junction.
At the scene, officers found a black Toyota Altis, Bangkok-registered, heavily damaged. The driver, identified as Ms. Aphai, 69, appeared heavily intoxicated, was incoherent, and vomited beside the vehicle near a roadside trash bin. Two beer cans were found inside the car.
Investigations revealed that the vehicle had been driven the wrong way for nearly one kilometer, starting from the entrance of the Bang Saray substation, before slamming into a parked Honda sedan on the shoulder of the road. The impact pushed the parked car approximately 50 meters, causing it to crash into a median barrier. The Honda belonged to a 66-year-old woman who was not inside the vehicle at the time.
The car’s owner told police she had parked on the roadside and entered a nearby shop when she heard a loud crash. Upon returning, she found her vehicle severely damaged and immediately alerted rescue workers, fearing injuries.
A witness, a 23-year-old man, said the Toyota was traveling at high speed in the wrong direction before violently crashing into the parked car.
Police administered a breathalyzer test to the driver, which showed an alcohol level of 157 milligrams percent, well above the legal limit. She was taken into custody and charged with drunk driving, with legal proceedings underway.
