BANGKOK, Thailand – The Royal Thai Army strongly condemns Cambodia’s indiscriminate attacks on civilian communities near the Thai–Cambodian border, calling them a serious violation of international humanitarian law and established norms protecting civilians.
Royal Thai Army spokesperson Major General Winthai Suvaree stated that Cambodian forces used military force and weapons against residential areas and civilian homes in non-military border zones. He emphasized that these actions directly violate the principle of civilian protection under international humanitarian law and have caused severe harm to innocent Thai civilians.
According to the Army, the security situation along the border remains tense. Indiscriminate force has caused significant loss of life, property damage, and disruption to civilian livelihoods, leaving residents in fear and insecurity. The attacks were conducted without regard for humanitarian consequences or civilian safety.
As of the latest assessment, approximately 400,000 people have been affected by the unrest. Twenty-three civilians have been confirmed dead, including one killed by a BM-21 multiple rocket launcher strike in a residential area and 22 others who died from indirect impacts of the violence. Six civilians have been injured. All casualties were uninvolved in the hostilities.
The attacks have also damaged civilian property and infrastructure, with over 30 houses reported damaged. Agricultural areas in several locations have been affected, preventing many residents from maintaining their livelihoods or living under normal conditions. (NNT)
