SONGKLA, Thailand – Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul led a visit to the main flood evacuation center at Prince of Songkla University (PSU) in Hatyai today (Nov 28) to assist communities affected by severe flooding in southern Thailand. The premier was accompanied by Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat, Industry Minister Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, and Culture Minister Sabeeda Thaised.
The PSU shelter has supported 10,061 people since opening, with 8,933 evacuees still staying on-site as of Friday afternoon and more than 1,100 residents already able to return home. During his visit, the prime minister met evacuees to hear their concerns and arranged immediate transport for a resident seeking to return to the Ban Koh Mee community, personally escorting the individual onto a high-clearance vehicle to ensure safe travel.
Shelter operations continue around the clock, with PSU staff, volunteers, and medical teams working to maintain safety and sanitation and to support vulnerable groups. Donations of dry food, clothing, and essential medicines remain ongoing and are being distributed to affected families.
PSU personnel and student volunteers are stationed throughout the facility to help with logistics and daily needs. Additional amenities, including five beverage vending machines installed by Tao Bin, have been added to support evacuees during their stay.
Local authorities reported a gradual improvement in several areas of Hat Yai, though many residents continue to rely on the PSU center while cleanup and recovery efforts expand across the district. (NNT)
