BANGKOK, Thailand — Former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has returned as head of the Democrat Party, winning an overwhelming 96.18% of the vote in an uncontested election during the party’s extraordinary general meeting on October 18. The event was marked by loud applause and a strong show of support from party members.

The meeting drew a large turnout, including former members who had previously resigned, many of whom shared Abhisit’s political vision. Among those present were Korn Chatikavanij, Sakoltee Phattiyakul, and Nipit Intarasombat. Upon arriving, Abhisit was greeted with flowers and supportive signs and briefly told reporters that his commitment to the party “has never wavered.”

Former Democrat leaders Chuan Leekpai and Jurinn Laksanawisit expressed hope for a strengthened party but acknowledged that restoring public trust will take time. Several former executives were also present, while others, including Chalermchai Sri-on, were absent.

Abhisit was nominated unopposed by Terdpong Chaiyanan, and after the vote, the result prompted resounding applause. In his acceptance remarks, Abhisit expressed gratitude and emotion while addressing party members.

He also unveiled his new executive team, which blends experience and new talent. Korn Chatikavanij will oversee policy, Kardee Liewpairote handles the digital economy, Juree Numkaew manages communications, and Radkelao Intawong Suwannakeeree focuses on women, youth, and sustainability. Weeraphong Prapha will oversee international economic affairs, Sathit Wongnongtoey handles political strategy, Isara Suntornwattana takes charge of foreign affairs, Amphon Pinasah manages education and northeastern affairs, and Chaiwut Bannawat serves as party secretary.

Ahead of the meeting, Korn said the team aims to pursue good governance for the people and emphasized that the executive team will blend veteran and younger members to adapt to a rapidly changing world. Party member Chaiyanachade Detchadecho confirmed he would oversee the southern region and expressed confidence in regaining voter support, recalling the party’s historic peak of 12 million votes. He also raised concerns about political parties allegedly buying MPs at 40–50 million baht per seat in elections, warning that voters must hold such practices accountable. (TNA)
