The Ministry of Culture urges Thais to proudly wear traditional royal-inspired attire as the nation prepares for UNESCO’s 2026 heritage consideration.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Ministry of Culture is encouraging all Thais to wear traditional Thai fabric in honor of a national milestone—the upcoming consideration of Chut Thai Phra Rajaniyom (Royal-Inspired Thai Dresses) for inclusion on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity next year. The initiative seeks to strengthen public awareness and appreciation of Thai textiles and traditional dress as lasting emblems of national identity and cultural pride.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture Prasop Riangngoen stated that the directive is in line with the policy of Culture Minister Sabeeda Thaised, who has prioritized the conservation and daily use of Thai fabrics as part of efforts to promote national identity and cultural pride. The ministry is now drafting its 2026 Action Plan to encourage government agencies, private organizations, and citizens of all ages to recognize and appreciate the cultural significance of wearing Thai fabric and traditional attire.

This campaign aligns with Thailand’s official nomination of Chut Thai: Knowledge, Craftsmanship, and Dressing Practices of Thailand’s National Costume, which UNESCO has confirmed for consideration at the 21st Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2026. The nomination features eight distinct styles of Chut Thai Phra Rajaniyom, each representing the artistry, elegance, and cultural refinement of Thai heritage.

Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya invites Thais of all ages to wear the eight royal-inspired styles of Chut Thai to celebrate the beauty of Thai culture with the world. The Ministry of Culture is encouraging agencies, designers, and communities nationwide to share knowledge of weaving, tailoring, and modern design, while supporting young talent and promoting local brands. The campaign aims to inspire everyone to wear Chut Thai on special occasions, reaffirming Thailand’s readiness to welcome UNESCO’s recognition next year. (NNT)
