Deputy PM Thammanat vows swift action to restore tourist confidence, addressing Chinese safety concerns and pushing measures to boost year-end arrivals.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister Capt. Thammanat Prompao has announced urgent efforts to revive Thailand’s tourism sector, focusing on restoring foreign visitor confidence, particularly among Chinese tourists concerned about safety.

Thammanat stated that the government’s immediate policy priority is to rebuild trust and ensure Thailand is viewed as a safe destination. He has tasked the Minister of Tourism and Sports with driving forward concrete measures to attract more visitors to the country.

He revealed that he recently met with Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jianwei, who highlighted five key issues that the Thai government needs to urgently address, including security concerns for Chinese nationals traveling in Thailand.

Addressing reports that Thailand could welcome three million Chinese tourists within just three months, Thammanat clarified that such claims were based on miscommunication and were not accurate. Nonetheless, he emphasized that the government is determined to accelerate tourism stimulus measures to maximize foreign arrivals during the year-end peak season.

Thammanat stressed that boosting tourism is a critical short-term policy to stimulate the Thai economy, with improved safety, service, and confidence-building measures expected to play a central role in achieving this goal. (TNA)
