BANGKOK, Thailand – The Contemporary World Film Series at TK Park continues with a screening of Crying Ladies (2003), a Filipino comedy-drama directed by Mark Meily. Organized in collaboration with the Embassy of the Philippines in Thailand, the event will be held on Saturday, September 27, at 4:00 p.m. at the Learning Auditorium, 8th floor, centralwOrld. Admission is free with advance registration, and doors will open at 3:30 p.m.
H.E. Millicent Cruz-Paredes, Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to Thailand, will introduce the film. After the screening, a reception featuring snacks and drinks will be hosted by the Embassy for all registered guests. The program is curated by Lekha Shankar as part of TK Park’s ongoing series showcasing international cinema.
The film follows three women—Stella, Aling, and Choleng—who are hired as professional mourners for a traditional Chinese funeral in Manila. Behind their theatrical performances, each woman struggles with personal hardship, emotional loss, and the realities of daily life. With warmth and humor, Crying Ladies explores themes of survival, dignity, and human connection.
The film received several awards at the Metro Manila Film Festival and was the Philippines’ official submission to the Academy Awards. It has screened at festivals across Asia, Europe, and North America. Non-members of TK Park are subject to an entry fee, with unlimited access for the day.
