PATTAYA, Thailand – Expats in Pattaya are praising local authorities for their humane approach to addressing vagrancy and homelessness, demonstrating what many describe as “Thai-style compassion.”

In a recent incident, Jomtien municipal officers responded to reports of a vagrant causing a public nuisance in Nong Prong Park. The individual was taken into custody and handed over to Dong Tan Police Substation. But as one expat commented, “What do you know about Thai-style compassion? Do you think they will arrest this man and throw him in jail? No—they will try to find out who he is and where he is from, and help him get to his family if he has any. If not, they will proceed to find him a space for care if he wants it, although unfortunately, some don’t want it.”

Pattaya authorities have also been proactive in helping the homeless in other areas. For example, a shirtless man found on Second Road was provided with clothing and medical care, reflecting a compassionate approach that prioritizes the welfare of vulnerable individuals while maintaining public order. These efforts highlight that the city’s approach is not about punishment but about understanding, empathy, and practical support.

Officials emphasize that these initiatives are part of a broader strategy to balance public safety with humanitarian assistance. Expats and locals alike have been impressed by this approach, noting that it goes beyond mere law enforcement to provide meaningful support to those in need. Pattaya’s model demonstrates how compassion can be integrated into practical public management, earning admiration from both residents and foreign visitors.
