BANGKOK, Thailand – Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has directed the construction of new bomb shelters in Nam Yuen district, Ubon Ratchathani province, to safeguard residents along the Thai–Cambodian border. The order came after it was reported that two villages in the district lacked protective structures, forcing residents to shelter in drainage pipes and under bridges during emergencies.
The situation was identified on August 8 when Lt Gen Adul Boonthamcharoen, an advisor to the Chaipattana Foundation, visited the district to deliver royal-granted supplies to Village Defence Volunteers. Upon learning of the issue the following day, Her Royal Highness instructed the Foundation to begin urgent construction to protect local communities from potential threats.
On August 10, the Chaipattana Foundation, working with local Village Defence Volunteer units, began construction. Materials were delivered to the sites, and residents joined community leaders in assembling the shelters.
Each shelter is built from six precast square concrete box culverts, measuring 1.8 meters wide, 1.8 meters long, and 1 meter deep, aligned to create a connected structure. The completed shelters will each hold approximately 50 to 60 people, offering secure refuge during periods of heightened security risk. (NNT)
