SURIN, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Phumtham Wechayachai visited Surin province today to encourage and support local residents affected by the Thailand-Cambodia border unrest. He coordinated with the Ministry of Transport to expedite the safe return of displaced people and instructed provincial governors to prioritize citizen welfare, authorizing full use of available budgets. Utilities like electricity and water fees during the conflict period will be waived in cooperation with the Provincial Electricity Authority and Provincial Waterworks Authority.

Phumtham was accompanied by Foreign Minister Maris Sengiampong and Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office Jiraporn Sindhuprai. Upon arrival at Rajamangala University of Technology Isan’s Surin campus, they were welcomed by Surin Governor Chamnan Chuenta and MP Chuchai Mungcharoenporn.

Phumtham expressed deep concern for the hardships faced by residents, which stem from external conflicts beyond their control. He praised the efforts of military, police, and local volunteers protecting the homeland and residents’ homes. The government is providing substantial funding to support border provinces, including increasing relief budgets from 20 million to 100 million baht and enhancing aid for evacuation centers.

Full government support mobilized as utility fees are waived and compensation increased for civilians and officials affected by the Thailand-Cambodia unrest.

He clarified that misinformation circulating among the public is false and urged trust in government measures, which include generous compensation for victims—up to 8 million baht for civilians who died, 10 million baht for state officials, and additional emergency funds allocated to affected provinces.

Phumtham ordered local officials to ensure the safe and organized return of evacuees, prioritizing those most vulnerable. He is coordinating with relevant departments to repair damaged homes and restore utilities. Discussions are ongoing to reduce or waive electricity and water charges for the affected period.

After the briefing, Phumtham personally accompanied elderly residents and bedridden patients returning home, demonstrating the government’s commitment to the well-being of those impacted by the crisis. (TNA)
