Thai police detain 36-year-old Cambodian national “Win” for illegal entry and firearm possession, after uncovering military gear and possible intelligence activities tied to Cambodia’s former PM protection unit.

BURIRAM, Thailand – Thai police have arrested a Cambodian national, identified as Win, 36, on suspicion of being a spy.

He was found with a homemade pistol and multiple Cambodian military uniforms, including one bearing the insignia of a unit that protects former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.

An investigation revealed that Win used four different names on various documents, including his military records, passport, national ID card, and work permit.

Police said Win, who claimed to have left the military years ago, was living in his Thai wife’s hometown. He reportedly entered Thailand illegally in mid-July 2025.

Authorities suspect he was collecting and transmitting information to the Cambodian government. An examination of his phone revealed photos of him in military attire and holding what appeared to be military-grade weapons.

Win faces charges of illegal possession of a firearm and illegal entry. Officials said further charges related to national security could be added pending further investigation. (TNA)
