Gripen E/F Contract Signing Slated for August 25 in Sweden, Delivery Expected in 2029

BANGKOK, Thailand –The Thai Cabinet has approved the purchase of four new Saab JAS 39 Gripen E/F fighter jets to replace the Royal Thai Air Force’s aging F-16s, with a budget of 19.5 billion baht. The announcement was made today through the official Facebook page of the Royal Thai Air Force.

According to the Air Force statement, the procurement aims to enhance Thailand’s air defense capability and maintain sovereignty over its airspace into the future. The contract signing ceremony with Sweden is scheduled for August 25, 2025, after which the aircraft will gradually enter service with the Star Squadron at Wing 1 in Nakhon Ratchasima around 2029.

The new jets will replace F-16s set to be decommissioned between 2028 and 2035, ensuring the Royal Thai Air Force continues to operate modern multi-role fighters capable of defending the nation’s skies.

The Saab Gripen E/F is an advanced version of the Gripen family, featuring improved radar systems, extended range, enhanced avionics, and increased payload capacity, which are expected to significantly boost Thailand’s air combat capabilities.
