Japan expresses deep regret over Thai-Cambodian border clashes, supports immediate ceasefire

Japanese Ambassador visits Thai-Cambodian border conflict zones, voices support for ceasefire and solidarity with displaced civilians.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Embassy of Japan in Bangkok has expressed its deepest condolences over the recent military clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border, voicing hope for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between the two countries.

In a statement posted today, Japanese Ambassador to Thailand Mr. Otaka Masato and Colonel Eiji Umetani, Defense Attaché, confirmed their participation in a diplomatic delegation that visited affected areas in Sisaket and Ubon Ratchathani provinces. The mission, organized by the Thai government, provided the delegation with on-site briefings on the current border situation.


The embassy offered heartfelt sympathy to those killed, injured, displaced, or otherwise affected by the violence. During the visit, Ambassador Otaka and his team engaged directly with evacuees and those impacted by the clashes, expressing solidarity and concern for their well-being.

“The Japanese government welcomes the fact that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire,” the embassy stated. “We sincerely hope this agreement will hold and lead to the normalization of relations between the two countries.”

Japan emphasized the importance of reducing tensions and adhering sincerely to the ceasefire agreement, and pledged to offer as much cooperation as possible in support of peace in the region.
