BANGKOK, Thailand – The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has issued an immediate ban on drone activity in designated high-risk areas, following increased tensions along the Thai–Cambodian border. The decision comes after authorities observed the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in ways that could compromise national security, disrupt official operations, or endanger public safety.
The directive restricts drone flights across multiple provinces classified as sensitive zones. These include Chanthaburi, Trat, Buri Ram, Surin, Nakhon Ratchasima, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Lopburi, Si Sa Ket, Ubon Ratchathani, Nakhon Sawan, Chai Nat, Phetchabun, and Phichit. The order applies to all UAV operators, whether recreational or commercial.
Drone operations are also strictly prohibited within a 9-kilometer (5 nautical mile) radius of any airport or temporary airfield. No exceptions will be allowed under the current order.
Violations carry penalties of up to one year in prison, a fine of up to 40,000 baht, or both, under the Air Navigation Act and the 2010 Act on Measures for the Suppression of Offenses Against Aircraft.
The ban is now in effect, and enforcement agencies have been instructed to ensure full compliance. (NNT)
