BANGKOK, Thailand – Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra made an unexpected appearance this morning at Ban Phitsanulok, joining a high-level “Team Thailand” policy meeting to address the looming U.S. tariff threat spearheaded by former President Donald Trump.
The meeting, which began at 8:00 AM on July 11, brought together top policy advisers to the Prime Minister and key ministers, including Commerce Minister Jatuporn Burusphat and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira. They discussed urgent proposals and relief measures ahead of the August 1 deadline, following Trump’s letter announcing a 36% import tariff on Thai goods.
Thaksin’s involvement raised eyebrows, marking his continued influence behind the scenes. Policy discussions reportedly focused on scenarios where Thailand would face the full 36% tariff, a reduced rate similar to Vietnam’s 20%, or rates more aligned with other countries in the region. The group debated potential changes to domestic regulations and trade commitments to avoid legal complications and soften economic fallout. (TNA)
