PHNOM PENH – The Cambodian Prime Minister has firmly stated that Cambodia will not engage in negotiations with Thailand unless Thailand fully reopens all border checkpoints to normal operations.
According to Khmer Times, Hun Manet, Cambodia’s Prime Minister, made the remarks yesterday while attending National Fisheries Day in Ta Keo province. He said Cambodia refuses to negotiate to ease border tensions as long as Thailand does not reopen all border crossings as usual. The current situation depends entirely on Thailand, which initially closed the checkpoints, forcing Cambodia to respond in kind. However, if Thailand fully reopens all border points, Cambodia would be willing to engage in talks between military leaders to reduce troop deployments. But if the current status quo persists, building mutual trust will not be possible.
Hun Manet also criticized Thailand for inconsistencies between its policy-makers and operational forces, as well as a lack of coordination between the Thai government and military. He cited the border closure as an example, stating that the Thai government issues one directive, but the military acts differently, creating obstacles to clear, credible, and sustainable solutions.
The Cambodian leader further addressed accusations from Thai media alleging mistreatment of Thai nationals in Cambodia, particularly regarding reports of Thai vehicles stranded in Cambodia since June 23. He firmly denied these claims, stating there are no Thai vehicles stuck in Cambodia. Additionally, he rejected allegations of Cambodian interference in Thai politics, especially concerning the leaked audio conversation between Hun Sen, Cambodia’s Senate President, and Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, as well as Hun Sen’s public criticism of the Shinawatra family.
Hun Manet emphasized that political appointments or dismissals within Thailand are Thailand’s internal affairs and not Cambodia’s concern. However, if Thai political issues impact Cambodia, Cambodia must respond accordingly. (TNA)
