BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has presided over the opening ceremony of the 3rd UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence 2025, held at Centara Grand Hotel, CentralWorld, from June 24 to 27. The international forum, involving representatives from over 104 countries, highlights Thailand’s growing international role in promoting responsible technology practices in the region.

In her opening address, the Prime Minister outlined three main directions for Thailand’s AI development. These include promoting the use of AI in agriculture, healthcare, and education; preventing misuse through disinformation and deepfakes; and encouraging AI systems that support human labor rather than replace it. The Thai government is now collaborating with private enterprises and academic institutions to upskill the workforce and support industries in adapting to emerging technologies.

Thailand is currently implementing a national AI strategy under the guidance of the National AI Committee. The strategy seeks to generate over 4 billion baht in economic value by 2027 by expanding access to AI tools and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises. The integration of AI is expected to help businesses reduce operational costs, increase productivity, and enhance their global competitiveness.

During the event, the Prime Minister also held bilateral discussions with UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay. Both sides agreed to establish a regional AI Governance Practice Center, which will support the application of UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of AI across Asia and the Pacific. The center will help build national capacity to manage ethical challenges and reduce the risks of AI misuse, especially in areas involving public deception.

Thailand’s engagement in AI development reaffirms its continued effort to shape global discussions on the responsible use of artificial intelligence through regional collaboration and policy leadership. (NNT)
