Vietnam forecasts a high chance of tropical storm formation in the South China Sea — Thailand closely monitors for potential heavy rain and rough seas in the Gulf.

PATTAYA, Thailand – Vietnam’s National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported that a low-pressure system formed over the South China Sea on Tuesday morning (June 24). The system has a 70% chance of strengthening into a tropical depression—a developing cyclone—within the next 24 hours.

This low-pressure area is expected to move northwest toward the northern part of the South China Sea. The worsening weather has already begun to affect the northern South China Sea region, including the waters surrounding Vietnam’s Paracel Islands.

Vietnamese authorities have urged fishermen and vessels operating in the affected waters to closely monitor weather updates and avoid hazardous zones to ensure safety at sea.

Meanwhile, the National Meteorological Center forecasts heavy rain and thunderstorms throughout the day over waters stretching from Binh Thuan Province to Kien Giang Province, including the Gulf of Thailand. Thailand is closely monitoring the situation as potential impacts could extend into its coastal areas.
