Deputy PM calls for continued dialogue under bilateral frameworks while emphasizing national sovereignty and civilian safety.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Phumtham Wechayachai has reaffirmed Thailand’s support for diplomatic efforts to address the ongoing border situation with Cambodia, while maintaining readiness to ensure national security. The announcement follows a bilateral meeting with Cambodia’s defense minister in Aranyaprathet district, Sa Kaeo province, where both sides exchanged views on maintaining calm along the shared border.

In his statement issued on June 7, Phumtham expressed concern over discrepancies in how the meeting was publicly interpreted, but reiterated that Thailand continues to seek peaceful solutions and remains open to further dialogue. While recent military movements have prompted Bangkok to adjust its security posture, Thai authorities stress that precautionary measures are being taken with restraint and a commitment to regional stability.

The Deputy Prime Minister outlined Thailand’s position, including its rejection of any violation of national sovereignty and its continued support for the Royal Thai Armed Forces in protecting civilians and ensuring safety in border areas. Thailand has proposed that both countries return their troops to positions held in 2024, viewing the step as a way to ease tension and reduce the risk of escalation.

Thailand also reaffirmed its preference for resolving boundary matters through bilateral mechanisms, with the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding and the Joint Boundary Committee serving as the primary frameworks. While the country does not accept the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice, it remains committed to negotiations that are constructive and respectful.

Authorities maintain that protecting civilians remains a top priority, and that Thailand will continue to act responsibly in managing the situation. The government has called for ongoing communication to avoid misunderstandings and to ensure peace along the Thai-Cambodian border. (NNT)
