NONTHABURI, Thailand – A plastic box containing 12 million baht in cash, found abandoned beside a trash bin at a well-known condo in Muang Thong Thani, has led police to a potential lead: a receipt bearing the name of a man linked to Thailand’s broadcasting regulator.
The discovery was made on the evening of June 5, when a resident of Building P2, Zone C, on the fourth floor of the Muang Thong Thani complex, spotted a suspicious grey plastic box placed near the trash area beside the elevator. Out of curiosity—and hoping to reuse the box—the resident opened it and was shocked to find it stuffed with bundles of 1,000-baht notes, later estimated to total around 12 million baht.
Startled by the sheer amount of money, the resident immediately contacted the police at Pak Kret Police Station, who rushed to the scene to investigate.
Inside the box, officers found not just the money but also documents, including tax withholding certificates and envelopes related to the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), Thailand’s communications regulator. A name appeared on the documents—identified only as “Mr. Taweewat” (surname withheld)—which could provide a significant clue to tracing the box’s origins.
Police have since seized the cash and launched a formal investigation to verify the legality and rightful ownership of the money. Meanwhile, the good Samaritan who found the box shared a video clip taken during the discovery, showing the moment she and a friend opened the container, revealing clothing on top and stacks of tightly bound 1,000-baht notes underneath.
Authorities are now examining the documents and nearby CCTV footage in hopes of solving this highly unusual and high-stakes mystery.
