BANGKOK, Thailand – The government has welcomed the latest global safety ranking from Numbeo, which names Chiang Mai the safest city in ASEAN for 2025 with a score of 78.2 points. Numbeo, recognized as the world’s largest crowdsourced database for cost of living and quality of life data, ranks cities based on public feedback on crime, healthcare, transport, housing, and safety perceptions. Chiang Mai leads the ASEAN list ahead of Singapore, Davao, Penang, Hanoi, Makati, and Bangkok, which ranks seventh with a score of 60.7 points.
The ranking coincides with a strong start to the year for Thai tourism. From January 1 to May 11, 2025, Thailand welcomed nearly 13 million international visitors, generating over 613 billion baht in revenue. China, Malaysia, Russia, India, and South Korea were the top source markets, while arrivals from Singapore grew by 18 percent in early May. Long-haul markets showed a seasonal dip typical of the low season.
Thailand’s tourism target for 2025 is 39 million visitors and 3.4 trillion baht in revenue. Current figures account for about one-third of the arrival target and just over 18 percent of the revenue goal. Officials expect continued growth in the months ahead as promotional efforts expand.
Chiang Mai’s safety ranking is seen as a boost to Thailand’s reputation as a safe and reliable destination. Efforts are continuing to improve safety, service quality, and visitor experiences to build trust among travelers and encourage more people to return. (NNT)
