Pattaya braces for heavy downpours as Thailand officially enters the rainy season on May 15.

PATTAYA, Thailand – The rainstorm has officially made its presence felt in Pattaya, with continuous showers soaking the city since early Wednesday morning. Streets across several neighborhoods are already experiencing minor flooding, as drainage systems struggle to keep up with the downpour. Locals and tourists alike are being urged to stay cautious and avoid flood-prone areas.

This sudden turn in weather aligns with a nationwide alert from the Thai Meteorological Department, which has announced that Thailand will officially enter the rainy season on May 15, 2025. From now until May 17, widespread rainfall is expected across the country, driven by a strengthening southwesterly monsoon and a low-pressure system developing over the Andaman Sea.

Somkuan Tonchan, Director of the Weather Forecast Division, warned that accumulated rain in several provinces—including Tak, Mae Hong Son, parts of central Thailand, the east, and the Andaman coast—could lead to flash floods, runoff, and urban waterlogging, especially in areas with poor drainage.

Between May 18-22, the monsoon is expected to weaken slightly, but isolated thunderstorms will still be common in the afternoons and evenings. Rainfall will likely increase again between May 23-28, with a risk of heavy rain in some areas.

Even though rainfall amounts are expected to be moderate overall, continuous precipitation could lead to disruptive flooding in some locations. The Meteorological Department urges residents—especially farmers and those in flood-prone zones—to monitor weather updates regularly and store water in preparation for possible dry spells forecast for late June to early July.
