BANGKOK, Thailand –The Department of Medical Services has activated a full emergency response following the collapse of a building in Bang Sue district during the March 28 earthquake. Instructed by the Ministry of Public Health, the department established a Medical and Public Health Emergency Operations Center to coordinate medical assistance for affected individuals and ensure the timely deployment of personnel.

A field emergency medical unit (ER Field Hospital) was set up near the site, led by Medical Emergency Response Teams under the Department of Medical Services. Medical personnel were drawn from major hospitals, including Rajavithi, Lerdsin, Phramongkutklao, and Police General Hospital, with additional support from the Erawan Emergency Center, the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, and mental health crisis teams. Operations have been running continuously, with rescue and medical services provided around the clock.

As of 7:00 p.m. on March 29, 87 people were reported missing at the collapse site. Nine individuals were rescued. Two patients in critical condition were transferred to Phayathai Hospital, while one moderately injured person and three with minor injuries were treated at the Royal Thai Air Force Hospital and Phayathai Hospital. Three patients were later discharged and allowed to return home.

Hospitals affiliated with the department were instructed to inspect their infrastructure for earthquake-related damage, working closely with civil engineers to ensure safety. Patient transfers were arranged where necessary to maintain uninterrupted care. Volunteer groups and charitable foundations supported the effort by assisting with transport and logistics.

In addition, hospitals were advised to maintain clear communication with patients and families in the event of any service disruption. The Department of Medical Services is now implementing a recovery plan to restore full operations across all affected facilities as soon as conditions permit. (NNT)
