Bangkok – The Tourist Police is stepping up its efforts to ensure safety for tourists and to crackdown on illegal tours in a bid to enhance the country’s tourism standards.

Acting Commissioner of the Tourist Police Division, Pol Lt Gen Sakhon Thongmunee on Tuesday chaired a meeting with government and private tourism and hospitality agencies to deliver his policy address on ensuring safety and boosting credibility.

He called on related agencies to crackdown on banned industries such as zero-value tours in order to ensure sustainable revenue for the country. The campaign will kick off in Chiang Mai and Phuket.

The Tourism Police Headquarters has expanded its personnel from 1,000 to 4,000 officers and is divided into four departments designed to crackdown on illegal activities in various regions. All departments will report to the Tourist Police Commissioner and his two deputies.
