Fourteenth annual Canada Day celebration to be held at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel on June 29

The Canada Day Committee announced that Canada Day will be celebrated at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel on June 29 this year. The event marks the 136th birthday of Canada and the 14th year the Canadian national day celebration has been held in Bangkok.

“We have had wonderful Canada Day celebrations in past years, and this year looks to be even better,” said Rosemary Imlah, chair of the volunteer Canada Day Committee organising the event. “We look forward to celebrating Canada Day at a new location this year - on the beautiful grounds of the Royal Orchid Sheraton hotel on the banks of the Chao Phraya River,” she added.

Officially, Canada Day is celebrated on July 1st each year, but the event will be held early in Bangkok so that the festivities can be enjoyed on a weekend. The aim of the annual event is to encourage Canadians and their families, friends, and colleagues of all ages and nationalities, to gather and celebrate Canada Day in a lively atmosphere, with delicious food, exciting games and fantastic camaraderie.

Attendance has been very high at past Canada Day festivities, with last year’s event drawing close to 800 people. This year, however, numbers will be strictly limited to 500, and all tickets will be sold in advance, with no tickets available at the door.

As in past years, Canada Day will feature children’s games, tug-of-war, and various sporting activities, while something new will be introduced at this year’s event - water sports and competitions played in the Sheraton’s large pool. Afternoon activities will be followed by a buffet dinner, which includes Canadian salmon and beef flown in for the occasion, and a host of prizes to be given away to lucky winners.

Tickets are only available through the Thai-Canadian Chamber of Commerce (TCCC). Ticket price includes dinner, two drink tickets for adults, and entry in the door and Grand Prize draws. Ticket prices: Adults: 1000 baht, Children (6-12): 500 baht, Children under 6 free. Reserved Tables of 10: 10,000 baht (in advance only; contact TCCC until June 21st)

Tentative schedule:

14:00 doors open

15:00 children’s games

15:30 volleyball tournament

16:00 adult games

17:45 greetings by Canadian Ambassador Dr. Andrew McAlister

18:00 national anthems, Grand Prize draw followed by dinner

For further information, please call the Thai-Canadian Chamber of Commerce, 139 Pan Road, Sethiwan Tower, 9th Floor, Tel: 02-266-6085-6 or email at [email protected]

Pattaya said “Skål” at Rene’s birthday

Miss Terry Diner

The local branch of Skål International, the group for tourism professionals, held their monthly meeting at the Thai Garden Resort’s Moon River Pub, and at the same time, celebrated the birthday of one of their group, the Thai Garden’s GM Rene Pisters. The evening was enjoyed by over 40 members and guests, with even one of the South African branches of the world-wide organization being represented.

Amorn, ruler of the Raj, making promises. Don’t listen to him Janine.

The evening was a buffet, with the Moon River’s legendary large choices on offer. Local gourmet, Jan Olav Aamlid was seen going back and forth many times, which may partly explain his 2 metre plus height; however, his lovely (and diminutive) wife Mio was also seen making frequent forays, so it must be more than the food, in Jan Olav’s case. Maybe it’s in the jeans. Genes?

President of the local branch of Skål International is Murray Hertz, and he invited Rene and his wife Ploy to join him for the ceremonial cake cutting, with a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday” being led by secretary Andrew Wood.

Ib Ottesen seems to be telling Rene something really amusing that only men would understand.

Amorn was making promises to Pat on the dance floor.

Murray and Clarisse let it all hang down.

Time to let loose, Ploy, Janine and Kannikar do the boogey woogey.

Rene with his favorite people, son Anthony, Janine and Pathama. Now where is Ploy?

It was pleasing to see hard working Bob Lee back from his recent overseas fact-finding mission, but his wife Elmarie winning the first raffle looked a little suspicious, particularly since Bob was selling the tickets! However, the Thai Garden’s guest relations lady, the delightful Janine Tillmans was on hand to ensure the drawing was transparent, with no dark influences or sticky ping pong balls being used. The second raffle was drawn by Max (dark brown voice) Foster, who came up from beneath the waves for the evening’s entertainment. This prize was won by Axel Borsdorf the local representative of TUI Travel who have brought hundreds of thousands of German tourists to Pattaya in the last 30 years.

So here she is! Ploy Pisters having a cozy chat with Jan Olav and Mio Aamlid.

The resident group, Up-Set, upset no-one, keeping up a steady diet of easy listening and easy dancing numbers. By the end of the evening, some of the members looked in need of easy-shuffling numbers, but all got through unscathed. Certain members with the Lothario look were seen queuing to dance with Pathama Krapinij, the vibrant sales manager from the Thai Garden, but she looked more than capable of handling the situation.
