PSC bowler goes for gold

A member of the Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League for about four years, playing at the Pattaya Bowl on Second Road every Friday afternoon, Kritsana Phetthae (Tue) had her devotion to the game rewarded by being chosen as one of a team of six ladies selected from throughout the province to represent Chonburi in the National Thailand Games held at Rayong from the 23rd - 30 July.

Kritsana bowled against tough opposition from many other provincial teams, of which some teams had previous members of the Thailand National team included in their squads. Through seven days of intense competition and strategy, Kritsana made it through to the final position play-off, missing the Gold, but claiming two Bronze medals and recognition certificates for her efforts, much to the delight of her husband and other team members.

PSC Bowling is proud to have one of their own go for gold and bring home the bronze.

Other bowling news

Ganzevoort and Parkinson, Powell keep new names at the top

PSC TAGGS Golf from the Hare House

Wednesday, August 26 - Bangpra International Golf Club (2 Man Scramble)

1st: Kevin Ganzevoort, Gary Parkinson, 67.6
2nd: Trevor Schirmer, B. J. Smith, 68.0
3rd: Sean Derring, Steve Massey, 74.4

The Aussies ruled the links at Bangpra on Wednesday. Playing in a two man scramble, two teams of Australians finished first and second with only four tenths of a stroke between them. TAGGS newcomer Gary Parkinson, playing off three, paired up with Kevin Ganzevoort to win the day with a net score of 67.6. "He was right down the middle all day," commented a fellow golfer on the drives that Gary was hitting. It took good drives and a solid short game to give the Aussie duo a gross three over par 75.

In second place, the other Aussies played extremely well together. Trevor Schirmer, playing off a twenty handicap, and B. J. Smith, playing off 35, just missed out on the first place trophy with a gross 79 and a net 68. Both chipped impressively, and Trevor’s putting was red hot on the front nine.

In third place with a net 74.4 was the British Legion Club’s entry in the field. Sean Derring and Steve Massey, both from Manchester, combined for a gross 82 on a Bangpra course where the greens were very fast and true in spite of the recent rains.

Friday, August 28 - Siam Country Club (Stableford)

1st: Dougie Powell, 37 points
2nd: Stephen Beard, 36 points
3rd: Ciano Glavina, 36 points

Most golfers don’t like to play in competitions where the same names take first place week after week. That is definitely not the case with the golf being played out of the Hare House. Dougie Powell became the fifteenth consecutive different singles winner in TAGGS tournaments.

Taking first place in the Stableford event played at Siam Country Club with 37 points, Dougie heads a long list of winners that dates back to June 17, when Yorkshireman Kevin Townsend won a Bogey competition at Great Lake. Between Kevin and Dougie there were Mark Campbell, Russell Finch, Stephen Beard, Dennis Willett, Norrie Whiter, Dereck Reaper, Kenneth Larsson, Carl Baumann, Charlie Davlin, Vic Cross, Peter Clare, Norman Brooks, and Mike Morris. For those who haven’t won in a while there is still hope.

Dougie won the day under clear skies and cooling breezes with a one under par 93 off a twenty-two handicap. He edged out the large field of 23 golfers by one stroke over Stephen Beard and Ciano Glavina, who both finished with 36 points. Ciano must have been thinking about blowing the horn when he finished the front nine with 21 points but he faltered on the back and lost second place in a count back.

PSC Golf next week

The second week of September starts with a stroke play competition at Phoenix from the Cafe Kronborg on Monday the 7th, while the Splinter Group from the Green Bottle play Stableford at Noble Place.

Pattaya Golf Society go to local Siam Country Club for stroke play on Tuesday the 8th, and on Wednesday a further chance to play stroke at Siam with the Splinter Group, while TAGGS from Hare House offer a better ball competition at Natural Park Hill. Staying in relaxed format, we go to Green Valley on Thursday the 10th from Cafe Kronborg for a two man scramble. The week ends with two good fixtures at Great Lake from the Green Bottle, and Laem Chabang from Hare House, both Stableford competitions.

Other key events coming in September are the ‘Rules Invitational’ on Friday the 18th of September at Khao Kheow - a Stableford match competition open to all PSC member golfers, between the Splinter Golf Group and TAGGS. The best 10 scores from each side will determine the winner of the Stableford Cup to be awarded at a Rules Quiz and Buffet at Hare House in the evening; and the other highlight of the month will be the inaugural Delaney’s Irish Open, organized by Delaney’s and PSC Golf at Rayong Green Valley on Friday October 2nd.

More details of both these events and the full September schedule can be seen in later issues of Pattaya Mail, at PSC Golf venues, and on our web page at www.pattayasports.org

Fitness Tips: Still more quick tips for a Healthy Body

by David Garred, Club Manager Dusit Resort Sports Club

Ciao Pattaya, if you need excuses to get started on an exercise program I have some good ones for you this week.

Keep moving - Sleep better
A group of retirees in California with generally sedentary lifestyles, though in generally good overall health, all suffered from minor sleeping disorders. As part of a 16 week long scientific study, half of them started a program of exercising plus brisk walking, each twice a week for 30 minutes. The other half on the other hand, continued their inactive lifestyles.

The result of the study was that night after night, those of the group that were exercising were able to fall asleep twice as fast. They also more able to sleep through the night around 12% longer than their inactive counterparts.

Think about it, burn more energy out of the body through the day, get a good nights sleep and wake up feeling better the next day!

Fluctuating blood pressure-a health risk
Consistently high blood poses a four times higher risk of getting a heart attack, fluctuating blood pressure even five times higher. This comes from a study done on Hawaiian men who had undergone three physical examinations in as many years. However, those fluctuations that are induced by taking blood pressure medication are generally desirable because the blood pressure is being lowered to less dangerous levels. Besides lowering the blood pressure, these drugs keep those dangerous "spontaneous fluctuations" to a minimum, thus reducing the risk two-fold.

Regular exercise under supervised conditions will also go a long way to help control high & fluctuating blood pressure. Ask your Doctor for advice first and take those details to your local qualified Health & Fitness instructor to ensure your safety.

Have a great week.
