Rescue units on standby as thunderstorm predicted in 40 provinces

BANGKOK, 6 March 2015  The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) is working in coordination with local rescue units reduce impacts from preparation for thunderstorm and gust predicted to happen in forty provinces nationwide until next Monday 9 Mar.

DDPM Deputy Director-General Anusorn Kaewkangwan revealed that the high pressure from China could cause thunder, gust and hail storms in wide areas in the Northeast, lower Central region and the East of Thailand during 6-9 Mar. However, only heavy rains have occurred so far without thunderstorm in the areas.

The official said the DDPM is ready for responding to any emergency situation during the period. Earlier, it had urged local people to remove signs and placards which are vulnerable to damage by wind and to brace for gusty winds and heavy rains.

A hotline 1784 is open around the clock for those who need helps. Moreover, eighteen DDPM provincial offices are on standby to dispatch respective rescue units to help people in need of help.

Mr.Anusorn said that the storms could however raise water levels in all reservoirs nationwide and help control forest fire and haze. Locals affected by the water shortage are suggested to take this opportunity to store water for consuming purposes.
