BANGKOK, 10 November 2013 The province of Lopburi is set to hold its annual “Monkey Buffet Festival” on November 24, sending out invitation to the primates.

The “Monkey Buffet Festival” was first held in 1989, 24 years ago. The main idea of the festival was giving fruit and vegetables to the local monkey as well as promoting tourism in Lopburi Province, which has since proven to be very successful given it has been drawing lots of attention from both Thais and foreigners; who flock over the province each year to watch over 2,000 monkeys feeding on a big pile of fruit and vegetables.

Local people believe that monkeys bring good fortune and prosperity to the province and its people. The feast is also a “thank you” of sort for the monkeys, whose presence attracts thousands of tourists to the city. The festival also hosts plenty of activities such as music and dance performances, while kids dressed in monkey costumes and wearing monkey masks walking and enjoying themselves around town.

According to the event organizer Yongyuth Kitwatananusont, the “Monkey Buffet Festival” will be held around Phra Prang Sam Yot in Muang District of Lopburi on November 24th.
